DAYS AFTER HE and Sophie had explored boxes in the middle of the night, Zeke woke early.

He made coffee and sat in a chair in the common room, recalling the way Sophie’s face blossomed with happiness as she sifted through the contents of box after box, the way she glowed when relating tidbits from her past. The more he got to know her, the more he wanted to know.

Shades of shamrocks, rainbows and pots of gold.

She was the last woman in the world he should develop feelings for.

The sound of murmured voices came from Mitch’s apartment. Upstairs, one of the twins giggled.

Everyone had someone. Except Zeke.

That wasn’t quite true. Zeke had friends in Second Chance. He had a job, today at least. His father was still alive, living in a one-room shack on the land they’d once owned, too stubborn to let Zeke care for him. What Zeke didn’t have—what he didn’t dare wish for—was a family. He wasn’t going to find one with the wealthy, well-educated Monroes. Families like the Monroes expected incoming members to certify their intelligence with college degrees from prestigious universities. He shouldn’t dream.

A cowboy’s life was mud, blood, guts and unsung glory. Standard stuff. Put in your hours and collect your paycheck.

He’d received his first paycheck from Sophie. He’d signed it over to Mack so she could order the last of his truck parts. What he had to do next was stop smiling at Sophie every time she got excited about something in one of those boxes. He had to stop letting his gaze linger on hers or drop to her lips. And he definitely had to stop all thoughts about kissing said lips.

The pragmatic side of him couldn’t wait for Sophie to hire a more appropriate nanny. The romantic side of him hoped Shane was right and she’d never convince someone from Young’s Academy to work in Idaho.

Sophie’s notebook sat on the coffee table.

Zeke reached for it. He flipped through the pages, admiring Sophie’s loopy letters and the jumble of words. So many words.

“Did Sophie give you permission to read that?” Shane appeared at the corner of the common room, having descended the stairs on silent feet.

“No.” Zeke closed the notebook and tossed it back on the coffee table.

“What does it matter if he reads it or not?” Mitch opened the doorway to his apartment. He held an empty coffee mug. “Are there secrets to the Monroe fortune in there?”

“Kincaid...” Shane shook his head. “If I wasn’t coffeeless this morning... If you weren’t going to marry my cousin... I’d have a great comeback for you. One that really stung.”

“Instead, in the comeback department, you stink.” Mitch gave Shane an expression that was almost a smile. “Get yourself a cup of brew and try again later.”

“Thank you.” Shane smirked.

“Besides, you seem to need it more than I do.” Mitch got in the last word.

Shane disappeared into the kitchenette as the familiar sound of four-year-old bunnies hopping down the stairs filled the inn.

“Zeke!” Alex ran across the common room and leaned against Zeke’s leg, digging his elbows into Zeke’s thigh.
